Future Business Leaders of America is the largest student business organization in the world, with over 200,000 members. It aims to foster an interest in business through competitive events that encompass all facets of the business world, from computer programming, presentations, and written tests. Community service is also a major part of the FBLA goal and has been accomplished through the partnership with March of Dimes to reduce premature deaths. By allowing students to earn recognition for their success in competitions, FBLA excites students about entering the business world. At Highstown High School, we capitalize on the opportunities given to us by the FBLA national organization.

Regional, State, National FBLA Competitions

Hightstown High School FBLA competes at regional, state and national levels. First, a member would select a subject area of their choice and compete on the regional level. If they place, they will move on to states and possibly to nationals. However, there are some competitions for subject areas that start at the state level, so if a member did not want to compete in regionals or was unable to, they would have this opportunity to compete. Also, members can go for the business workshops in the state competitions. The competitions involve in most cases an objective test, which could be followed by a presentation or performance-based task. Sometimes, these tests are computerized. The Hightstown High chapter has sent members all the way to nationals, and has seen victories even at that level. The 2015-2016 NJ State Leadership Conference will be held in February in Atlantic City, NJ.

Consumer Bowl and JA Titan

The Hightstown High School FBLA Chapter also has expanded its horizon to include participation in other business competitions such as the New Jersey Consumer Bowl and the Junior Achievement Titan Virtual Competition.

The Consumer Bowl deals with Cyber Safety from the consumer point of view and how to avoid scams when handling money electronically. It also teaches the competitors key ethics when doing business which especially relate to the consumer. This competition is executed in a "buzzer-like) way, where the first team that knows the answer to the question and presses a button gets to answer to earn points.

JA Titan is a virtual competition that involves a simulation of a business. It includes many aspects of running a successful business, such as marketing, R&D, charitable giving, unit price, etc. It tests students' management skills in a hands-on way by requiring every team to submit a financial plan every other day; the winning team is the one with the highest Performance Index(PI) value.
